2007 GOALS OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MOUNTAINS TO SEA TRAIL INCORPORATED:

1.

SERVE CLOSELY WITH the Division of Parks and Recreation of the North Carolina State Government, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and municipal and county governments, in making decisions concerning the State Park proposal for the MST;

2.

PROMOTE the MST by the means of Information Reports, the FMST website, brochures, information booths, and regular e-mail updates,

3.

PROMOTE AND ORGANIZE five MST Statewide Trail Days in the year of 2007 to construct, maintain, or research the MST,

4.

INCREASE the annual Patron Membership of the FMST to 100 members;

5.

MAINTAIN one or more task forces for each county that the MST goes through to aid in its maintenance and establishment;

6.

ENCOURAGE task forces to increase the amount of youth involvement in the construction of the MST;

7.

PROMOTE the FMST Incentive Program to reward those volunteers who are working on the MST;

8.

CONTINUE to update a comprehensive list of task forces composed of private volunteer groups and public staff members of parks and forests to oversee and help maintain the entire 934.3 mi. of the MST across the state;

9.

SEEK corporate sponsors to assist the funding for FMST information to the public;

ACHIEVE a minimum of 15,000 Service Hours to the MST during the year of 2007;

11.

SUPPORT the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition of AHS and the Land for Tomorrow projects of which we are members.

12.

SUPPORT the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition 2007 Conference in Black Mountain , North Carolina .

13. DESIGNATE MST the following MST sections:
  • Blue Ridge Parkway – NC-18 to NC-16 for approximately 15.0 miles
  • Cedar Point: the section of NC-12 from the junction of US-70 to Cedar Island and Ocracoke Island ferry, due to the water level in this area (15 miles).
14. THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP OF THE FMST PROJECT DIRECTOR AND THE FMST TASK FORCES:
A. Support the Carolina Mountain Club in construction of the MST from Balsam Gap (south) to Soco Gap.
B. Address the safety issue of multiple trail connections into the MST from Bear Pen Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway to NC-215 for 8.5 miles.
C. Paint white MST blazes from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center , Great Smoky Mountains , to the Blue Ridge Parkway .
D. Paint white blazes and ask the BRP to repair damaged MST signs on the MST from Beacon Heights to US-321.
E. Continue trail flagging of the MST from the North West Trading Post on the Blue Ridge Parkway to US-321.
F. Encourage Stone Mountain State Park to search for a complete MST route and keep it’s section of the MST maintained for hikers.
G Continue working with Pilot Mountain State Park to search for a MST route.
H. Continue support of the Sauratown Trail route between Pilot Mt. State Park and Hanging Rock State Park .
I.

Support Hanging Rock State Park by adding signs and white MST blazes along the MST.

J. Explore an alternate route for about 10 mi. of the MST from Danbury to Strawberry Road which is south of Summerfield and north of Greensboro .
K. Seek approval and start trail construction of the MST from West Point on the Eno to Falls Lake Recreation Area at NC-50 with the Falls Lake Task Forces.
M. Continue efforts through the “MST East Plan” to route the MST downstream along the Neuse River and Little River from the Falls Lake Dam and through Goldsboro for contact with the Waynesborough city park, Kinston , and through the city of New Bern to connect to the Neusiok Trail.
N. Support the Neuse River Task Force in its establishment of a route from Selma to Goldsboro to connect with Waynesboro City Park along the Little River corridor.
O. Support the Neusiok Trail in maintenance, MST signs, and white blazes. Support the Croatan Task Force in its establishment of a route from New Bern to connect with the Neusiok Trail.
P. Create a task force for Ocracoke Island and install MST trail signs.
Q. Support the Cape Hatteras National Park staff and the new FMST task forces with new MST signs and MST white blazes along the MST from Frisco Campground to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the North Pond Interpretative Trail at Pea Island Refuge, and the Bodie Island Dike Trail.
