The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) runs 1,000 miles across North Carolina from the Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to Jockey’s Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks. In 2000, the Legislature designated the MST as a North Carolina State Park. Since then FMST and state and local governments have been working hard to get the trail on the ground. To date, 500 miles of footpath have been built. With temporary connectors on back roads, people can now hike across the state. We know of 16 people who have completed the entire trek.

What We Do

Trail Building and Maintenance – hundreds of FMST volunteers build and maintain trail across the state.

Education – we spread the word to people who love trails and North Carolina – citizens, companies, government officials – and help them find ways to use, care for and extend the trail.

Acquisition of New Trail Corridor – we work with State Parks, local governments and nonprofit land trusts to help them acquire more land to build new sections of trail.

Advocacy – we help elected officials – local, state and federal – understand the value of the trail for recreation, quality of life, the economy and environment. We explain how our governments can help make it happen.

Fundraising – we encourage individuals and corporations to contribute financially to support the trail.
