About FMST

The Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail (FMST) is a non-profit organization designed to make the vision of the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) a reality. Across the state within the planned MST Corridor, volunteer task forces have been formed to assist in the creation and maintenance of the MST. FMST provides aid and assistance on maintaining the MST across the state. Presently, the team's mission is to examine the history of the MST, assist with its leadership and development of construction and maintenance task forces, identify issues, and plan for the future. Click here to find to total description of what a Task Force does for the FMST.

FMST Vision:

The vision of the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail is the completion and long term stewardship of a 1,000 mile trail spanning North Carolina's diverse cultural and natural features from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockey's Ridge State Park on the Atlantic Coast.

FMST Mission:

The Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail's mission is to bring together the community and volunteers to build and maintain a simple footpath connecting the state's natural treasures for the enjoyment and education of people.

Each year, the FMST board sets a list of goals that serve as the focus for the organization's efforts to connect and maintain the MST. The year 2007 was a very successful year for the FMST that help lay the foundation for 2008 and beyond. FMST works through the efforts of volunteers to coordinate between many state, federal, and local agencies, as well as private landowners and local municipalities.

Are you planning to hike and/or bike the entire MST? So far we are only aware of twelve completed treks of the MST, (click here to review) Make sure you keep a journal of your journey across the state so we can add you to our list of completed treks.
